HILL STREET BLUES

Grambling State University’s Women’s Basketball team is 2-0 in conference play this year. They are 5-8 overall. That may not get much attention from main stream sports fans, but it should. This year’s team is being led by guard Shakyla Hill. Through 13 games, she’s amassed 85 rebounds, 69 assists, 73 steals, and averaged 15 points a game while shooting 43 percent from the field. Those numbers alone are staggering! The biggest stat for her came as recently as Wednesday night's game against Alabama State where she accumulated 15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals. That’s the first quadruple-double recorded in women’s Division I hoops since another fellow Arkansan, Sonja Tate, did it in 1993. Hill is a graduate of LR Hall High School and helped lead Jacksonville to a State Championship as a sophomore with Jessica Jackson.

It wasn’t until 87-88 when the NCAA started recording steals and assists in women’s college hoops. Since then, only four women have accomplished the feat. I just want to take the time to applaud her for her efforts.
