Today's topic: The Hogs---
I swear it's hard being an Arkansas Razorback fan when it's football season! In reality, it is what it is. Let's just chalk another season up to being sad! But unlike a huge portion of the fan base can we really expect much when the administration lets us down from top to the bottom--
Bret Bielema, Bobby Petrino, Houston Nutt, and Danny Ford have been the last coaches to handle the reins, and "NO" I don't consider that hiccup with John L. Smith as official. It was management that made that decision. When Alabama got tired of the Mike Shula's of the world and terrible seasons, the administration ponied up some major stacks for Nick Saban. For the hip-hop impaired, "major stacks" is a lot of money! When the Tide invested in a legitimate coach, they got legitimate wins and so on....
In 2012, The Razorbacks hired Bret Bielema. I covered the press conference and I've interviewed him but we aren't best friends. Yes, I like him! I'm sure his wife and family will agree he's a great guy, but the honeymoon is over. After 5 years, he's 29-32 overall: 11-27 in conference games. He's 1-5 for 2017 going into the Mississippi State game. That shouldn't be acceptable! Meanwhile, the Tide flirted 3 years with Dubose, sprinkled in a lil Franchione, added Mike Shula, and a pinch of Joe Kines before they realized it's time to pony up and get something real.
I'm not here to kick a man when he's down! Personally, Bielema might be a good dude! He may even be a great coach! But he hasn't been very good at Arkansas. And technically, we don't pick from the same pool of players that Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia picks from so we shouldn't be upset they're much better teams right now.
Whatever happens at the end of 2017, let's keep our eyes on the people who hire the coach as well as the coach himself. I loved this old phrase I learned from an old mentor-"If you don't give a damn about your stuff, why should I?" They have no problem asking the fan base for more money! They should just spend it better. I like the new facilities and pretty little toys, but I like "W's" too!
